Exigence

Before taking the course, I didn’t know what exigence is, often confused about exigence and purpose. However, the two are different. Exigence is basically an issue or a problem that prompts someone to speak. It is different from purpose or stance. Exigence is before everything else, something that motivated me to write the document. Exigence is at the beginning, and it leads to the purpose.

For example, my memo is about the sign around campus being inconvenient. Here, my purpose is to suggest the planning director with the solution. However, my exigence is before that, the inconvenient campus signs that made me write this. There is a problem with the signs, which prompted me to write a memo whose purpose is to suggest a solution.
