The purpose is basically why the document is written. It could be to inform a person or public to address a specific problem to report, or something else. Every writing has a purpose, and the ultimate goal is to achieve it. Therefore, it is important to have a set purpose before writing and plan the paper accordingly.

For example, in my memo, I addressed a problem with the signs around the CCNY campus. My goal was not only to inform that there is a problem but suggest a solution. I want the planning director to consider my suggestion, and it would be best if the director accepts it. However, it can be done only when I write thoroughly according to my purpose.
